Chemical Hardening Of Glass
Why Chemically Harden Glass?
Chemical hardening increases resistance to scratches, breakage and thermal shocks. Unlike thermal hardening of glass, there is no deflection or other deformation. Chemical hardening is suitable for glass from 0.5 mm to 3 mm thick.
How Does The Chemical Hardening Of Glass Work?
The glass is immersed in a bath of potassium nitrate at a temperature of 300 ° C. This causes the sodium ions on the surface of the glass to be replaced by potassium ions from the bath. Potassium ions are larger than sodium ions, their replacement introduces a large stress into the glass surface, which can reach up to 690MPa. The tension serves as an invisible shield and protects the glass from breakage, scratches and thermal shocks.
